From the world’s first fashion design schoolESMOD HISTORY
In 1841, Alexis Guerre-Lavigne, tailor, inventor and innovator, created ESMOD, the first fashion school in the world;
accessible to all and specialised in clothing design.
Lavigne was also the master tailor in the royal court of Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III. In 1847, Lavigne invented the soft metric measuring tape and took ESMOD internationally by publishing his cutting methods manual in German and English. The manual contained principles of pattern drafting and illustrations catered for various body types and postures, and later became a learning requirement in fashion schools of that era.
Lavigne went beyond his textbook publications and invented vital tools for the fashion industry, among which were the draping mannequin, rulers, set squares and more.
ESMOD celebrated its 180th anniversary in 2021 with a network of 20 schools in 13 countries around the world.
In 2012, ESMOD Kuala Lumpur has set out and finally opened its doors to young aspiring fashion designers.

With more than 30 years of success in producing creative talents to meet the international creative and
animation industry, The One Academy is all set to train the next generation of creative fashion designers by
bringing Paris fashion design to Malaysia. The One Academy’s ESMOD Kuala Lumpur has now opened its doors
to young aspiring fashion designers. It is the only Paris fashion design school in Malaysia.
ESMOD Kuala Lumpur has fully embraced the teaching ideas, content, methods and materials of ESMOD Paris.
Offering Diploma in Fashion Design & Pattern-Making, ESMOD Kuala Lumpur has also brought in
French lecturers and resources to compliment the teachings of ESMOD Paris.
Students are offered the best of 2 worlds – where they are trained with international fashion designing insights
as well as hands-on practical pattern-making skills. This will provide students with comprehensive abilities to
design a series of couture and develop it according to the needs of the market – training them to be ready for
the industry upon their graduation.
